Newborn FAQs

Newborn Session FAQs:

When should I call to schedule my newborn session?

Preferably before your baby is born. It is so important to plan ahead. Since you never really know when your little one will arrive I will put you on our calendar to hold a spot for you. As soon as your baby is born, please contact me immediately and we will schedule your appointment accordingly.

Capturing your newborn within the first 7-10 days of life can make all the difference in your newborn portraits. Newborn babies photograph best at this time. At this point they are still very sleepy and like to curl up as if they were still in the womb.

It can take up to four hours for a newborn session as I leave plenty of time for feedings, diaper changes and breaks for mommy and baby.

If your baby comes early or if your baby is already born, don’t worry! I always do my best to squeeze newborns into the schedule and older babies take beautiful portraits too! I look forward to meeting your new little one!

I will photograph older newborns! If your baby is over 2 weeks old and you would like to have portraits taken, please reach out to me.

What should my baby wear?

Newborns photograph best without any clothes at all. I will wrap the baby in blankets with lots of soft texture. I have an extensive supply of newborn hats, bows, and headbands that coordinate beautifully with our blankets and props. You are welcome to bring any outfit or props that you would like to have the baby photographed in.

How should I prepare for my session?

For Baby:

I recommend that you bring baby to the session well rested and plan to feed baby as soon as you arrive. Sleepy babies photograph perfectly, so when you arrive, undress and swaddle your baby before feeding. This way, there is a smaller chance of waking the baby up in transitioning them for photographs.

We take many breaks during the session for feeding and changing.

For Parents/siblings:

Please bring an extra outfit for photographs (if you wish some with your baby) in case of an accident. With naked babies, there may be moments that require a change of clothes. You are also more than welcome to bring the outfit to change into in the studio. Especially with older siblings, it may be easier to keep clothes clean and nice by just changing into them before photos.

Colors for outfits should be solid colors or muted patterns within the same color family. Such as gray on gray or light gray with white etc. Black/white shirt with jeans is a classic example of what families will bring to their session. Solid colors work best.

How often and which detergent do you use for your wraps, blankets, and outfits?

All of the wraps, blankets, clothing, rugs, etc are washed in dye free, fragrance free laundry detergent. New baby skin is so delicate and can be irritated easily. I also do not use any dryer sheets or fabric softener. I use tumble balls in the dryer. All blankets, and wraps are washed after each baby.

Other Items of Note:

My studio is in the finished basement of my home. There is a carpeted flight of steps to go down. I also have a powder room in the basement so there is no need to travel up a flight of steps for that need.

I am fully vaccinated as are the members of my family.

Please be aware, if you have pet allergies we have two dogs living in our home. A Cairn Terrier named Violet, and a mutt who we believe is part Lab and German Shepard named Martigan (Marti).
